Choosing where to stay in the Semois valley
The Semois valley is first explored on the water, but it is best enjoyed when you sleep there. Between Vresse-sur-Semois, Alle, Membre, Bohan and Bouillon the offer is dense and very seasonal: here is how to find your way.
Three questions are usually enough to decide:
- How many nights? For a single night before or after the kayak, an aparthotel or a central hostel does the job. For a weekend or a week, a cottage or chalet with a kitchen and a terrace quickly becomes more comfortable.
- On what budget? Solo or as a couple, the aparthotel and the youth hostel are unbeatable. From four people, a shared cottage often works out cheaper per head than a hotel.
- What level of comfort? If the evening matters as much as the river — spa, gourmet table, complete quiet — the character hotel is justified. Otherwise the simplicity of a chalet by the water is plenty.

Where to stay depending on your kayak route
As the valley unfolds over some thirty kilometres, it is best to sleep near your start or finish point.
Vresse-sur-Semois

Bouillon
Further east, at the foot of the fortress. The youth hostel for a small budget; the castle of Bouillon and the Cordemois abbey to visit the next day.

Aparthotel
The freedom-comfort compromise: a self-catering flat, but with breakfast, cleaning and hotel bedding. In Vresse, Au Pied de Vigne fills this niche and remains the most central address for alternating river, terraces and walking without ever taking the car.
Cottages and chalets
The go-to format for a stay with several people. Kitchen, living room, garden or terrace, often a wellness area: you settle in for several days. Extending the kayak trip by a night
Most kayak routes on the Semois finish in the middle or late afternoon. Staying on site changes everything: you take the time to have dinner, you let the gear dry, and you keep the next morning free for a walk, a viewpoint or a visit rather than the drive home.
The combination that works best: a night in Vresse-sur-Semois the evening before to put in first thing, then a second night in Alle or Bouillon after the descent to fan out towards the landmarks of the valley: Naglémont, Le Jambon de la Semois, Orval abbey, Bouillon castle.
When to book
The Semois valley is a destination strongly shaped by summer weekends. A few markers:
- July-August, weekends: book 2 to 3 months ahead, especially for hotels and large cottages. The best dates go from spring onwards.
- May bank holidays and Ascension: 1 to 2 months ahead.
- April-June and September-October: often possible at 1 or 2 weeks, with good value and a calmer river.
- Winter: the offer shrinks, but cottages with a fireplace or sauna come into their own for a weekend by the fire.
Remember to lock in the accommodation booking and the kayak booking at the same time: the most popular descent slots go as fast as the rooms.
