Kayak Ardennes: The Best Routes & Tips
The Belgian Ardennes, a land of water and legends. Find your next river adventure.
The Ardennes, a kayaker's paradise for over a century
Three great rivers, a thousand moods. To go kayaking in the Ardennes is to choose between the wild Semois, the touristy Lesse and the lush Ourthe — each with its own personality.
The Ardenne massif is one of the oldest in Europe: its schist rocks date from the Devonian, more than 380 million years ago. It is this unique geology that today carves out spectacular meanders, sheer cliffs and thousand-year-old beech forests that you paddle through. Each river tells a different story — the Semois, designated a National Park in 2022, shelters the most preserved nature in Wallonia; the Lesse, crossed by kayaks since 1898, keeps the soul of historic Belgian tourism alive; the Ourthe, queen of the northern Ardenne, charms with stone villages such as La Roche.
With more than 15 years of experience and over 50,000 guided descents, we help families, sporty paddlers and contemplative souls choose the river that suits them. This guide is the result of those years spent on the water.

The Ardennes, shaped by water and time
Understanding the geography of the Ardennes means understanding why kayaking here is so special.
A unique geology
The impermeable Ardenne schist stops water from seeping away. The result: rivers with sustained flows and rocky beds that make the water remarkably clear — you can see your feet from the kayak.
A living heritage
Bouillon, La Roche, Dinant: the medieval castles punctuate your descents. The Semois flows at the foot of the castle of Godfrey of Bouillon (11th century), leader of the First Crusade, to your right, kayak between your legs.
A Natura 2000 biodiversity
Grey herons, kingfishers, beavers, otters: Ardenne wildlife has recolonised the rivers over the last 30 years. On the Semois, 1 descent in 3 meets a heron and a few lucky kayakers even spot black storks.
Semois, Lesse or Ourthe?
| Feature | The Semois | The Lesse | The Ourthe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atmosphere | Wild & quiet | Lively & touristy | Green & calm |
| Difficulty | Easy to moderate | Moderate (weirs) | Easy |
| Crowds | Moderate | Very high | High |
| Scenery | Ardenne forests & meanders | Cliffs & castles | Valleys & villages |
| Verdict | For untouched nature and disconnection | For the tourist buzz between Houyet and Dinant | For an easy descent in the northern Ardenne |
Our verdict: if you are looking to disconnect and find untouched nature, the Semois is the undisputed choice.
Which river depending on who you are?
Beyond the comparison table, here is our honest recommendation based on your main expectation.
The enduring adventurer
You are after a physical challenge over a full day, kilometres swallowed up and a real sense of effort.
7h+ of paddling, wild meanders, crossing the national park. The benchmark for experienced kayakers.
The family with children
You want safety, shallow water, a gentle current and the option of a swimming break.
Water at 40–80 cm, natural beaches, duration 2h. The number 1 choice for families for 30 years.
The tourist-photographer
You want castles, cliffs, a "postcard" atmosphere and lively villages at the finish.
Limestone cliffs, castles, arrival in Dinant. But brace yourself: very crowded in summer.
10 years of observation distilled into 6 tips
Our instructors see 10,000 kayakers go by every year. Here is what they say over and over again.
- Choose the river based on the flow of the day, not on the plan you made the night before. A Semois at 5 m³/s is peaceful; at 30 m³/s it turns sporty. Check our flow pages before you set off.
- Avoid the Ascension weekend and 15 August. Three Ardenne rivers saturated on the same day = 6 hours of traffic jam. Go the day before or the day after.
- Take the first shuttle of the morning. You will have the river to yourself, the light is superb and you will see more wildlife (herons, ducks, sometimes otters).
- Do not underestimate end-of-day tiredness. 17 km in a kayak is easy for the first 5 — the 15th km demands concentration. Eat and hydrate early.
- Respect the Natura 2000 zones. You are crossing ecological sanctuaries. No wild camping, no fire, no amplified music. The nature of the Ardennes is our shared heritage.
- Go for a two-seater when you are a beginner. More stable than a single, it lets a beginner learn alongside someone experienced. Moving up to a single will come naturally on the 2nd or 3rd outing.

Three descents, three moods
We compared the Semois and the Lesse, and we have come back to the Semois 3 times this year. The nature is incomparable, we only passed 4 kayaks in 4 hours.
The Bouillon → Alle descent is an expedition. 27 km, 7 hours on the water, a picnic by the Semois — we still talk about it two years later.
First kayak at 55. We chose the 7 km, and we doubled the time because we stopped so often. The Semois is far calmer than we had imagined.
The Ardennes are waiting for you.
